2005 Barge Bash Photo Highlights

The Hancock Chamber of Commerce sponsored the 3rd Annual Barge Bash in historic Hancock Maryland, on Saturday, June 25. The race began at 1 pm on the C & O Canal. Each team built a handmade barge and towed its vessel up the canal with a tow line. There were trophies for eight different categories as well as a People's Choice Award. The National Park Service and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources were on hand with displays and information on the C & O Canal and the Western Maryland Rail Trail.

New this year was the addition of the Mini Barge Bash with trophies and cash prizes for teh fastest, most creative, most authentic and most unusual.

The lead barge was "Carla B" was sponsored by the C & O Canal Bike Patrol and captained by Mary Minderlein. They were off to a quick start and without mishap finished with the prize for Fastest Barge.

Sponsored by Hancock Lions Club and captained by Carl Pelton, "The Lion's Raft" took the prize for Best Use of Humor.

"Lazy Days of Summer" captained by Tom Rokisky and sponsored by Citizen's National Bank won Historic Barge Recreation.

The Best Use of Humor Award went to Hancock Arts Council's "An Artist's Impression" captained by Susan Hamilton.

The Dr. Murphy's Veterinary Practice, took the Judges Award with its replica of a Riverboat.

Titled "Athena Accounting Tax-i Service", this barge took Best Organizational Theme and Peoples Choice Award. It was sponsored by Roland's Garage and captained by Jasmine Hott and Robbie McCusker.

The Interfaith Service Coalition entry "Christian Crusaders" took the prize for Ugliest Barge. It was captained by Jean Pittman. It's always a crowd pleaser when a barge takes a spill, and the little princess really took it in stride and got right back in and finished the race with style.

The Cutest Barge was awarded to "Big John's Mean Green Machine" (aka John Deere). Sponsored by Weaver's Restaurant and Pittman's Liquor.
